AB InBev Launches Employee Program To Support World Environment Day

Luton, UK, 05 June 2009 - Anheuser-Busch InBev has a dream to become the ‘Best Beer Company in a Better World.’ As part of this ambitious goal, the world’s leading global brewer is using the platform of World Environment Day to promote an employee focused competition across the globe to find ways to conserve, recycle and reduce the resources used to produce its products – all with the hope of reducing the company’s environmental impact.

Part of the company’s ‘Better World’ plan includes encouraging employees to undertake meaningful environmental projects at work and in their communities, all over the globe to celebrate World Environment Day on June 5 which was launched by the United Nations in 1972. Anheuser-Busch InBev employees are working on more than 176 sustainability projects in 19 different countries.

“Everyone has an important role to play in protecting the planet for future generations and we take our responsibility to heart,” said Jean Lepine, global director of sustainability and the environment for Anheuser-Busch InBev.

“Every action counts when you are trying to reduce the use of natural resources and tackle the challenges of climate change,” added Amy Fraenkel, director of UNEP’s Regional Office for North America.”

Anheuser-Busch InBev has committed to challenging global environmental targets for 2010 in the following key areas:

  • Increasing its recycling rate to 98 percent;
  • Reducing its energy and water use by 10 percent per hectoliter of production (the water target is 3.75 hectoliter per hectoliter); and
  • Reducing Green House Gas emissions by 10 percent per hectoliter.

In the United Kingdom, InBev UK and Anheuser Busch breweries and facilities have several activities planned to celebrate World Environment Day including:

  • A ‘Bike to Work’ programme will be launched on the 5th of June at all sites to encourage employees to leave their car at home and bike to work.
  • For people who need to travel to work by car the number of miles travelled will be off-set by supporting RIPPLE an initiative to plant trees in Africa.
  • At the Samlesbury brewery parts of the plant are stopping for volunteers and contractors to repair leaks and a local primary school has been invited to design posters for World Environment Day.
  • Recycling facilities will be placed at the entrance of the Wellpark brewery which will also be available for public use.

“I have been really impressed by the creativity and commitment of all my teams across the UK in taking action and making a difference for World Environment Day,” said Stuart MacFarlane president of InBev UK.
