Ben Fogle banks on Stella Artois eco-friendly hedge fund

14 August 2009 - Environmental campaigner and adventurer Ben Fogle is backing the Stella Artois Hedge Fund to help replenish Britain’s depleted hedgerows, which are critical to the existence of many plants and animals throughout the UK.

The Stella Artois Hedge Fund is proudly supported by The Tree Council and the National Hedge Laying Society, who are responsible for growing new hedgerows in the British countryside. The Hedge Fund will plant an estimated 365,000 saplings together with an additional 8,500 hedgerow trees.

British hedgerows are important as they play a significant role in supporting wildlife and reducing the rate of climate change – 1km of hedgerow will absorb up to one tonne of CO2 a year.

From his own adventures Ben has seen first hand the effect of climate change on the environment – from Anglesey to the Antarctic.  Ben believes that driving environmental change is about everyone doing the small things everyday to make a positive contribution to our environment which is why he is fronting the campaign.

Ben says: “I believe that everyone needs to take responsibility for driving environmental change – if we all just do something small each day, then each one of us can make a positive contribution to the environment.”

“There was a time when hedge funds were just that – funds to create hedges. The Stella Artois Hedge Fund is an amusing play on words with a serious commitment to fund the planting of hedge saplings and hedgerow tress across the great British countryside.”

Shoppers can participate by purchasing special packs of Stella Artois and for every pack purchased Stella Artois will invest in an actual hedge fund.

Andreas Hilger, Marketing Director for InBev UK says: “As the UK’s Number One lager we are helping consumers to take small steps with us. The Hedge Fund promotion enables Stella Artois to help consumers take those small steps together to reduce the rate of climate change and support British wildlife.”

Pauline Buchanan Black, Director-General of The Tree Council, adds: “We are particularly grateful to Stella Artois, and to the consumers who are choosing the product, since their contribution through the Hedge Fund will make a real difference to what can be achieved.”

Hedge management expert Nigel Adams of the National Hedgelaying Society says: “Hedgerows help to define our countryside yet we often take them for granted. In order to pass on the skills of the ancient craft of hedgelaying to future generations we need to protect and manage those that we have and replace those we have lost. The Stella Artois Hedge Fund provides a huge boost to our threatened countryside.”

Stella Artois is taking small steps to ensure all cans are made from no less than 50% recycled aluminum, working hard with suppliers to ensure all bottles are above industry average with 75% recycled glass and that all corrugated Stella Artois boxes are made from 100% recyclable paper.
